The Five Motion Senses: Using Mems Inertial Sensing to Transform Applications

چکیده
Still, to an extent, the idea persists that inertial sensors are useful mainly when the end product has a need to detect acceleration and deceleration. True enough from a purely scientific view. Yet, that could be to miss out on many of the expanding uses of MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes in areas such as medical devices, industrial equipment, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics.

The Five Motion Senses: Using MEMS Inertial Sensing to Transform Applications
For instance, an accelerometer with activity detection can enable power management techniques by telling a device to go into the lowest power consumption mode when that device is determined to be inactive in the absence of movement or vibration. Complicated controls and physical buttons are being replaced by gesture-recognition interfaces controlled by the tap of a finger. In other use cases, t...

This project maps the distributed feedback loops of biological photoreceptors to silicon to create low-power high-performance silicon photoreceptors. Such photoreceptors are useful as front ends in VLSI motion sensors, important in robotic and active-vision applications. An ultra-low-noise MEMS vibration sensor, which provides inertial information to a vibrating visual sensor being built by col...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Inertial and Visual Sensing an Introduction to Inertial and Visual Sensing
In this paper we present a tutorial introduction to two important senses for biological and robotic systems — inertial and visual perception. We discuss the fundamentals of these two sensing modalities from a biological and an engineering perspective. Digital camera chips and micro-machined accelerometers and gyroscopes are now commodities, and when combined with today’s available computing can...
متن کاملInertial Sensing-based Method for Characterization of Activities with Walking Assistive Devices
INTRODUCTION Measurement of the evolution of the physical activity in assistive devices (ADs) of daily use might increase the flexibility of the rehabilitation programmes [1]. Also, while walking ADs become more a more autonomous and intelligent [2], reliable and simple methods to assess and adapt performance are demanded. MEMs-based Inertial sensors are called to become standard devices for hu...
متن کاملUNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Accuracy Enhancement of Integrated MEMS-IMU/GPS Systems for Land Vehicular Navigation Applications
This research aims at enhancing the accuracy of land vehicular navigation systems by integrating GPS and Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) based inertial measurement units (IMU). This comprises improving the MEMS-based inertial output signals as well as investigating the limitations of a conventional Kalman Filtering (KF) solution for MEMS-IMU/GPS integration. These limitations are due to ...
